12 Apr Steam Subscriber Agreement Kosten
Following customer protests, Valve`s General Manager, Gabe Newell, stated that Counter-Strike 1.6`s advertisements were only a trial and that there were no plans to extend this refinancing method to other Valve or Steam games, and that as soon as everything worked smoothly, they could be removed from 1.6. He added that the advertising option was intended to fund cheap or free games from small game developers in the future. Steam`s low broadcast costs and rapid reaction times allow for more intensive use of special pricing models compared to traditional retail distribution. For example, the introduction and development of Steam have an influence on the development of the video game industry. A sharp increase in the cost of producing commercial games (multiplied by 30 since 1997) leads publishers to adopt a risk prevention strategy, which is why publishers are more likely to reject innovative ideas for fear of loss. Online sales channels such as Steam are opposed by sharply reducing distribution costs. On September 23, 2013, Valve announced its first operating system called SteamOS. SteamOS is Linux-based and should be especially suitable for playing in living rooms or large screens and for high graphic performance. Thus, Steam games can also be streamed by other PCs. A hardware solution designed only for wireless transfer of game content to a screen is Steam Link. The corresponding app for iOS was banned from the App Store in June 2018 because it allows access to a software store outside Apple`s ecosystem, in violation of Apple`s policy. SteamOS will soon be available for free download, in the future all new releases will also be available on SteamOS.
In November 2011, unknown persons entered Valve`s servers and were able to access customer data (including billing addresses and credit card information). Valve then advised all customers to check their credit card statements carefully. In October 2012, ReVuln discovered a critical security flaw related to the extension of the “steam://” Windows protocol. ReVuln has managed to take full control of the computers involved, thanks in part to rigged URLs and a logging function of the source and unreal graphics engine. In principle, the problem persists today. In October 2013, a critical security breach related to The Privilege of Windows NT “SeDebugPrivilege” and insufficiently secured storage areas was discovered by security expert Graham Sutherland. Graham Sutherland has warned against the possibility of a full takeover by malware. Valve responded shortly afterwards with a safety update.
In the meantime, users can back up their account with Steam Guard two-factor authentication, which sends a PIN by email when connecting an unknown device. Since October 2012, in addition to games, other software has been distributed via Steam. To use games or software purchased or free on the platform, the Steam client is required, which can be downloaded to the official page as a freeware under a proprietary license.
